One Common Heart is a small nonprofit that supports the development of sustainable, culture-specific community platforms for sharing local traditional knowledge and skills across generations in indigenous communities.
I was the sole designer responsible for the end-to-end process of defining online visitors’ experience of One Common Heart. I consulted on written content creation, information architecture, style elements, visual layout and user interactions within the site. Effective brand communication was a major priority. It was important to consult actively with the client throughout the process on broad conversion goals and on a core sense of institutional identity. From these conversations, competitive research, and several back-and-forth rounds of ideation and wireframing, we developed a way to communicate an ethos of environmental and social responsibility, paying respectful deference to cross-cultural differences while resisting the potential to invite the mystification and fetishization of many of those involved in OCH’s work. (Several major design decisions were made in the service of this latter goal.) Most of all, we chose to emphasize a deep love and celebration of human community, with clear, streamlined ways to get involved.
